Welcome to the Phonics Method

Dear Parent,

If you’re reading this, you want to give your child a head start in reading. But if you grew up in India like I did, you were probably taught to read by memorisation: “A for Apple, B for Ball.”

The problem? When a child sees the word “CAT”, they try to say “Cee-Ayy-Tee”. That doesn’t sound like a cat.

Phonics is different. Instead of teaching the names of the letters, we teach the sounds they make. So “c”, “a”, and “t” blend smoothly together to make “cat”. It’s a logical, stress-free code that helps children read independently.

1. The Golden Rule

The #1 mistake parents make when teaching sounds at home.

2. The Core 6 Sounds

Master Phase 1: s, a, t, i, p, n — and why we don’t start with A–B–C.

3. 5 Easy Games

Stress-free, 10-minute games to play at home today.

Chapter 1

The Golden Rule: Stop the “Uh”

Before we look at the letters, we need to talk about the biggest mistake parents make when teaching phonics at home.

It’s called “adding a schwa.” A schwa is the “uh” sound. Many of us instinctively add an “uh” to the end of consonants because it makes them easier to say loudly.

❌ The Wrong Way

Saying “muh” for M.

Saying “puh” for P.

Saying “suh” for S.

✅ The Right Way

Saying “mmmm” (like something is yummy).

Saying “p” (a quiet puff of air).

Saying “ssss” (like a snake).

Why is this so important?

If your child learns “puh-a-tuh”, they’ll try to blend it together and read “puhatuh” instead of “pat”. Keeping the sounds crisp and clean makes blending much easier for their little brains.

Chapter 2

Phase 1: The Core 6 Sounds

You might be wondering: “Why don’t we start with A, B, C, D?”

In Jolly Phonics, we teach letters in specific groups based on how easily they blend into real words. If we teach A, B, C, D… we can only make the word “cab”. But if we teach s, a, t, i, p, n, your child can read sat, pin, tap, pan, nap, pit, and dozens more.

s

“ssss”

Like a snake hissing.
Don’t say: “suh”

a

“a”

Like an ant on your arm (short and sharp).

t

“t”

A quiet click behind the teeth.
Don’t say: “tuh”

i

“i”

Like a squeaky mouse (short, as in ink).

p

“p”

A very quiet puff of air from the lips.
Don’t say: “puh”

n

“nnnn”

A continuous hum with the tongue up.
Don’t say: “nuh”

Chapter 3

5 Easy Phonics Games

Children learn best when they’re playing. Here are 5 games that require zero setup and take just 10 minutes a day.

1

I Spy With My Little Sound

Instead of letters, play with sounds. “I spy something that starts with the sound ssss.” (Sofa, Spoon.)

2

The Sound Jump

Write s, a, t, i, p, n on pieces of paper. Say a sound out loud. Your child jumps onto the correct letter paper.

3

Mystery Bag

Put everyday items in a bag (a pen, an apple, a spoon). Let your child pull one out and guess the first sound.

4

Robot Talking

Pretend to be a robot who only speaks in sounds. Say: “Get your c-u-p.” See if they can blend the word.

5

Fridge Magnet Scramble

Use magnetic letters (or flash cards) to build simple words you say out loud, like sat or pin.

Pedagogical References

LittleLearns strictly adheres to internationally recognised, evidence-based frameworks for early literacy. The methods in this guide are derived from the following established systems:

1. Synthetic Phonics Methodology

The practice of teaching the sounds of letters and how to blend them together to read words (as opposed to Analytic Phonics, which teaches whole-word recognition first). Supported extensively by the UK’s Independent Review of the Teaching of Early Reading (Rose Report, 2006).

2. Jolly Phonics Framework

Developed by Sue Lloyd and Sara Wernham. This guide implements the specific sequence of the 42 letter sounds, divided into 7 structured groups. The Phase 1 sounds (s, a, t, i, p, n) are taught first because they form the highest number of simple three-letter CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words.

3. The NIPUN Bharat Mission

A Government of India initiative (National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy). Our phonological awareness games directly support the mission’s goal of universal foundational literacy and numeracy for all children by Grade 3.

4. Cambridge Assessment English

Our instructional techniques for non-native English speaking parents align with the communicative language teaching principles outlined in the Cambridge Young Learners (YLE) framework.

5. Google & Microsoft Certified Educator Frameworks

Our online classroom practice — sustained student engagement on video, multi-modal lesson delivery, and digital-tool fluency — aligns with the standards held by Google Certified Educator (Level 1 + 2) and Microsoft Certified Educator. Monika holds both certifications, so LittleLearns’ live Zoom classes meet the same digital-pedagogy benchmarks used by leading international online schools.

Chapter 5

You’ve mastered Phase 1.

You now have the tools to teach the first 6 sounds correctly. But there are 36 more sounds to learn on the journey to independent reading.
